The five questions my mentees ask most.
Every person's situation deserves its own conversation, but here's how I think about five of the questions I'm asked most often by my young mentees.
If you're reading this on your child's behalf, that's exactly who this page is for too. Good mentorship isn't a vague pep talk: it's a structured process with clear steps, real accountability, and a track record you can check. Below, you'll see exactly how I think and work, so you can decide if it's the right fit before your child ever sits down with me.
How can a mentor help me?
Growing up means facing choices, setbacks, and uncertainty in every part of your life: school, career, relationships, money. A mentor doesn't remove those challenges, but having someone experienced consistently in your corner cuts the time it takes to work through them, and lowers the chance of an expensive mistake. As the saying goes, "a problem shared is a problem halved."
Find workable solutions to the problems you're currently stuck on
Reframe a setback as an opportunity, or make peace with what can't be changed
Connect with people and opportunities outside your existing circle
Set realistic short- and medium-term goals that build toward long-term success
Encounter perspectives that positively challenge how you think

What should I do if my passion is different from what my parents want me to pursue?
You usually don't have to pick a side: the strongest plans blend your parents' concern for security with your own passion, sequenced over time rather than forced into a single either/or decision.
A student's parents insist on law school, worried about job security amid industry disruption. The student wants to study music production, in a growing industry where African music's global appeal is rising fast. Instead of choosing one path, I'd suggest combining them:
Study law with a specialization in media, entertainment, and intellectual property rights: a skill set that lets you negotiate your own contracts and protect your own work later.
Practice as a media/entertainment lawyer for a few years to build industry contacts and earn the capital to self-fund music projects on the side.
Once a few strong demos prove your work to people who could hire or sign you, shift into music full time.
Artists usually struggle with getting paid fairly, getting noticed by dealmakers, and financing their own projects. This path solves all three before you need them. "Having it all" is often about sequencing, not choosing. John Legend worked as a business consultant before becoming a musician, and that commercial grounding shaped his career and earning power ever since.
Why can't I find a job after graduating, even after applying and interviewing?
It's rarely about effort: most stuck graduates are applying broadly without a strategy, and no one has told them their real strengths yet. That's exactly the gap my Graduate to Employed mentorship package is built to close, through three steps:
Review what's actually happened so far: how relevant your past applications were to your real skills and interests, and an honest read of any interview feedback, so the next round shows real improvement instead of repeating the same misses.
Run a StrengthsFinder assessment, so your genuine strengths come through clearly in your LinkedIn profile, CV, and interview answers. Strength-led candidates read as confident, and confidence is what gets remembered.
Map feasible opportunities: both job applications and your own initiatives (projects, freelance work, volunteering). Staying active protects your confidence, focus, and appeal to employers while you search.
From there, the full Graduate to Employed program walks through the remaining steps to landing the right role. Stay encouraged, and watch the skills in demand rather than the job titles; titles can be misleading about what a role actually needs.

How can networking help me, and where do I start?
Networking simply means meeting people who think differently than you do, and it pays off in better decisions, opportunities you'd never have heard of otherwise, and a bigger picture than your immediate environment. Getting comfortable with it comes down to a few building blocks:
Practice low-stakes first. Use classroom discussions and conversations with friends and family to get comfortable asking questions and sharing your opinion; it makes talking to strangers much easier later.
Prepare a little before you show up. A few conversation topics or questions ready in advance will set you apart in any group where most people stay quiet.
Be genuinely present one-on-one. Don't let the urge to sound smart get in the way of actually listening.
Start close to home, then expand. Junior and senior students, alumni, guest speakers, teachers, lecturers, and coaches are all connected to organizations and networks that could employ, recruit, or mentor you. Every internship, volunteer role, or job you take afterward expands the network further, and its value compounds.
I feel like life is happening to me instead of me being in control. How do I fix this?
Psychologists call this your "locus of control," and it's one of the most common feelings young adults bring to mentorship. The good news: it's a skill you build through small, deliberate choices, not a fixed personality trait. Here's where I'd start:
Separate what you control from what you don't. Write down what's actually in your hands right now: how you spend your evenings, what you say yes to, how you treat people, what you read or study, and put your energy only there. Chasing what you can't control is what makes life feel like it's happening to you.
Stack small, deliberate wins. Each time you follow through on something you decided to do, your brain files it as evidence that your choices create outcomes. A few small wins in a row build real momentum toward bigger ones.
Take on planned challenges, not just comfortable ones. Doing something difficult and succeeding (a hard conversation, a new skill, a stretch project) builds what psychologists call self-efficacy faster than almost anything else. It's also how uncertainty starts to feel like a challenge instead of a threat.
This shift doesn't happen in one conversation: it's built one decision at a time, which is exactly the kind of steady accountability a mentor provides.
